Energy Modeling Intern

Salt Lake City, UT or Phoenix, AZ

About this position:

TBCx is looking for an Intern Energy Modeler that is a self-starting intern willing to learn or expand on energy modeling knowledge. The qualified candidate will assist with commercial building efficiency design consulting and utility incentive energy modeling. Typical work will involve the creation of energy models including creating building geometries from project drawings, setting up HVAC systems, the evaluation of energy efficiency measures and the writing of reports.

No energy modeling experience is necessary, but the successful candidate should be able to demonstrate a basic understanding of building physics and commercial building mechanical equipment, as well as an aptitude for working with complex computer programs. Previous experience in design or construction is preferred as well as an understanding of the following: HVAC systems and efficiency, LEED Rating Systems, utility incentives, electrical systems, energy audits, HVAC controls and energy analysis of building systems. Remote work may be considered depending on experience.

 

Education Preferences:

  • BA/BS degree in Mechanical Engineering, Architecture, Facilities Management or equivalent field of study preferred.
  • Relevant work experience considered as highly as formal education.

Preferred Candidate Attributes:

  • Previous experience with energy modeling highly valued, but not necessary
  • Experience with eQUEST preferred, but Open Studio experience will also be considered
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills are required
  • Ability to carry out tasks with minimal direction
  • Knowledge of utility rates and rebate programs
  • Ability to identify and quantify the benefit of energy efficiency measures
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel and Word required

Monitoring Based Commissioning (MBCx) Project Engineer/Manager

We are looking for a Monitoring Based Commissioning (MBCx) Project Engineer that is motivated, capable of client contact, evaluating project needs, writing proposals, making presentations, as well as the ability to complete all required project tasks on schedule. The MBCx Project Engineer will work directly with potential Clients, Business Development & Marketing Teams to pursue projects in addition to performing the day-to-day project activities. Strong client relations, engineering, and project management skills are required for this position.

The MBCx Project Engineer is responsible for managing monitoring-based commissioning services within the context of new construction commissioning projects and leading projects with ongoing energy optimization services. This requires assisting with traditional on-site commissioning tasks as well as deploying MBCx to identify operational deficiencies, energy savings opportunities in buildings, performing energy savings calculations, and writing reports. The MBCx Project engineer will work as a part of a larger commissioning and energy services team focused on providing clients with high functioning and efficient building operation. This position requires estimating, bidding, and project management capabilities.

Duties and responsibilities to include but are not limited to the following:

  • Lead a successful MBCx process as part of a coordinated commissioning and energy service team.
  • Work with client IT department for approval of MBCx connections and hardware.
  • Integrate MBCx tool (preferably SkySpark) with new or existing building management systems.
  • Set up and manage analytics within the software platform.
  • Coordinate data collection and evaluation of data.
  • Prepare and perform energy audits, calculations and MBCx reports.
  • Present all findings to the customer and work with them to make changes and validate energy savings after implementation.

 

Specific Job Skills/Requirements

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Solid knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite with a high level of proficiency in MS WORD and MS EXCEL.
  • Solid knowledge of IT and control integration, sequence modifications.
  • Experience with Data ETL methodologies, software algorithm design, software performance tuning
  • Attention to detail, software design, software debugging, software development fundamentals, software documentation, software testing
  • High level of proficiency with SkySpark or similar fault diagnostic software including:
    • Create connectors from IP addresses using Modbus, BACnet, or haystack protocols.
    • Leverage client BAS to accurately map and tag points in SkySpark.
    • Perform data quality checks.
    • Track and document malfunctioning points, missing data, and overall site concerns.
    • Ensure sites are built on schedule.
    • Create and deliver Fault Detection Diagnostic (SkySpark) reports
    • Attend and document design, monitoring based commissioning, and coordination meetings.
    • Design, implement and optimize control sequences.
    • Utilize analytics to maintain energy savings, equipment reliability and improve occupant comfort.
